The first Olympics to include baseball were held in 1904 and it was a rousing success. There were two gold medal winners, and the first ever for Japan. However, baseball was dropped from the Olympics by the International Olympic Committee in 2008. In 2008, the sport was added back to the Olympics, but only at the discretion of the host country. As of this writing, baseball will not be part of the Olympics in 2024 in Paris, but it is expected to return to the Los Angeles games in 2028.
In 1996, baseball last appeared on the Olympics in Beijing. The games are played the same as in professional baseball, except that aluminum bats are prohibited. Teams will have a seven-inning mercy rule if they’re ahead 10 runs or more. In Sydney, rosters will be expanded from 23 to 24 players. At this time, the games will last for eight days. And, as if this weren’t enough, the Olympic games will feature baseball in the 2024.
