Baseball Art – Beautifully Deft
Each piece of baseball art in The Gladstone Collection of Baseball Art is devoted to the sport itself, whether the creator was an amateur artist or an professional sign painter with deadlines to meet. No two games are ever identical, but they do share in common the ball, the bat, the players, and most importantly, the time spent representing their favorite team. Two teams will almost certainly share many of the same images, although their specific designs may vary slightly. More than anything else baseball art depicts the unique characters who make each game unique.
One particular piece in The Gladstone Collection of Baseball Art shows the famous image of Babe Ruth at the plate. His famous ” Babe Ruth ” smiley face is splashed across the bottom right-hand corner of the painting as he prepares to swing at the ball. His open stance and left-handed approach to the plate position distinguish him from other Babe Ruth imitators. This work by artist Mike Doyle, who is responsible for many of the player’s signature looks, particularly the ones that reference Ruth, is a fine example of baseball art. While it shows clearly the dimensions and weight of the Babe Ruth, its focus on the man himself is uniquely his own.
Another piece in the collection, entitled simply “The Boston Bruins” features an entire page dedicated to the team. On the lower half of the page is an entire checklist of players who have worn the number that is worn on the sweater that bears their name. It includes such notable players as Bobby Smith, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Jack Moore, Bobby Smith, Ted Williams, Red Sox pitcher Curt Flood and others. Then below are three actual photographs of some of those players. All told, this is a superb exhibit of baseball art, and one that any fan of the sport will find fascinating.
