Each year, baseball america top 100 comes out with a list of the best prospects in professional baseball. These lists ostensibly aim to project a player’s long-term MLB impact, but they also have built-in allowances for the likelihood that a prospect will fall short of that ceiling. The list is a mix of prospects who have already reached the majors and those who are still a few years away.
The list varies a bit from publication to publication, but the fine folks at Baseball America do a great job of finding prospects with high ceilings and good track records. The list is a mix of position players and pitchers, and it has a healthy dose of middle infielders and outfielders. Right-handed and left-handed pitchers make up the next two largest groups.
The 2023 draft class makes a strong showing on the list, with 18 of the top 100 prospects coming from that deep-than-usual crop. The biggest fallers from last year’s list are a couple of pitchers, but the drop is mainly because of injury issues that have delayed their advancement.
There are a few notable risers from this year’s list. ZiPS is really into New York Yankees shortstop Jorbit Vivas, who it thinks could fill in well for Gleyber Torres over the next four or five years. The computer is also pretty into Baltimore Orioles catcher Samuel Basallo, who has a very high offensive ceiling and a solid glove.
